As a leader on a team, a pitcher must set a great example towards everyone on the team and all of the fans. Because pitchers are leaders they need to constantly work on the mental game of baseball, their attitudes and integrity. Outstanding pitchers are those that set and accomplish goals. This raises a couple of questions. What is the formula for success for pitchers on and off the field?

Let me tell you what I think a well rounded pitcher has on the field. First of all they have established sound pitching mechanics. They have and outstanding work ethic due to their workout regimens. They utilize functional fitness to their full advantage doing pitching specific exercises as opposed to just trying to build bulk and size. Winning pitchers are those that understand and apply the mental game and want to stay in the game until the last out is made. They also never forget the importance of what goes in their bodies. This means that they are not only fit to pitch, but their nutrition is optimal.

There are also many other factors that dictate what qualities and characteristics make better pitchers. I know that the smartest pitchers care so much about their health that they would never jeopardize it by using illegal substances or abusing any performance enhancing drugs. Winning pitchers understand that to perform at their best they need to keep their cool in tough situations. This means they apply the mental aspects of Baseball and understand that failure is a part of the game.

Pitchers are leaders! They know the game is in their hands and it starts and stops when they want it to. They take advantage of learning the core values that true leaders have and mimic what qualities and characteristics they possess. Great pitchers have outstanding attitudes and people want to be around them. Their attitudes are contagious as they strive for everyday greatness. Someone once said that preparation will give you a chance to be successful in a game of failure. The very best athletes set goals everyday of their lives.

Dont think you will leave a great legacy by merely throwing up big numbers on the scoreboard. Live everyday to its fullest.
